What are cookies?
A cookie is a piece of information stored on your computer by the websites you visit. In some browsers, each cookie is stored as a separate file, while in others (for example, Firefox) all cookies are stored in a single file located in the profile folder together with other personal data and settings.
Cookies often store website-related preferences such as login status, default language, or location. When you revisit a website, your browser sends the cookies related to that website back to the server. This allows you to remain logged in and enables the website to provide personalized content based on your preferences.
Cookies can store a wide variety of information, including data that may be considered personally identifiable (such as name, address, email address, or phone number). However, these are only data that you voluntarily provide to the website. Websites cannot access any information that you have not shared with them, nor can they access files stored on your computer.
By default, the storage and transmission of cookies happen transparently for the user. However, it is possible to modify your browser settings (for example in Firefox) to approve or reject the storage of cookies, or to delete cookies automatically when closing the browser.
Cookies serve many different purposes and can be divided into several types:
- Session (strictly necessary) cookies, which are essential for browsing and using the website properly. These cookies only function within the given session and are automatically deleted when you close your browser.
- Functionality cookies, which—if you choose—remember your username and password. These can be configured by the user to make using the website easier and more convenient, improving the overall user experience. For example, order details such as billing and shipping information can be saved so that you do not have to re-enter them on future visits.
- Advertising cookies, which manage and display advertisements based on your interests. You may have experienced that products or services viewed on one website appear later on other websites. For example, if you search for accommodation on a website and accept cookies, returning to the site later may display offers based on your previous search, making it easier without having to re-enter travel details.
- Performance cookies, which collect information about how visitors use the website, such as what and how they search. It is important to note that these cookies do not identify users by name, location, age, or profession. They are used solely to improve and develop the website—for example, to determine whether certain elements are clearly visible or appropriately placed.
